Hi,
I'm a Toronto Hydro Peaksaver customer - they've just installed a BLI28000 for free - which is nice.
However, it only measures aggregate energy use for my whole house.
What I really want is an easy way of measure the energy use of individual appliances.
Yes I can turn off an appliance and see the effect (although hard to do for a fridge or freezer - given they cycle on-off based on thermostats - the two largest electricity users in my house)
Yes I also know I can get this by achieved by installing zigbee smart plugs mentioned on your websites, but that's over kill. I know I can also get this using some of your competitors products - such as Kill-a-Watt - but its very hard to get to behind a fridge to be able to plug that in.
What I really want is something I can "clip-on" (i.e. current-transformer) to a circuit (as it leave the electrical panel) or an individual appliance lead (between wall receptacle and appliance) - so I can monitor without having plug and unplug the monitor (or find room for for the monitor between wall and the back of the appliance - not so easy for large appliances.
Or...*EVEN BETTER* check out this solution from Navetas "non-intrusive load monitoring" (NILM) - which figures out energy consumption at the appliance level using ONLY the consumption patterns gathered from monitoring the flow of electricity of the meter (some smart algorithms are involved): http://www.navetas.com/corporate/intelligent-sustainable-energy.aspx. Also some more info on NILM here: http://openenergymonitor.org/emon/node/285 and http://openenergymonitor.org/emon/node/86
Could you add the software to do NILM to your BLI28000?

Hello,
Great to hear you are participating in the peaksaverPLUS program with our friends at Toronto Hydro!
With the PowerCost Monitor you received through the program, you can indeed monitor individual appliances using the APPL button Appliance feature!
When you press APPL, the Display Unit memorizes the total current consumption and then displays only the consumption above that value until you press APPL again.
First, turn off the appliance you wish to measure, wait a few minutes, press the APPL button, then turn on the appliance. The APPL indicator is displayed in the top row and, after a few more minutes, the values displayed represent the energy currently consumed by that particular appliance.
You can also choose to press APPL first, then turn off the appliance. The value displayed will still be positive, as it will represent the quantity of electricity that the appliance was consuming before you turned it off. When you are done, press APPL again to return to normal mode.
NOTE: To obtain realistic results, you should ensure that no other appliance, light bulb, etc. is turned on or off while you are measuring an appliance.
This feature of the BLI-28000 model PowerCost Monitor is indeed a non-intrusive load monitoring solution.
In addition, we offer an accessory PowerCost Monitor WiFi Unit which when paired with our software partner Plotwatt offers an even more in-depth ‘NILM’ for your home. Without any other pieces of hardware or things attached or plugged into devices in your home, Plotwatt’s technology while using our Blue Line data will report back usage to you through their online application of what are your top 5 appliances.
Here is a link to the Plotwatt product and information page on our website: http://www.bluelineinnovations.com/Products/power-cost-energy-monitor-wifi-gateway/PlotWatt/
We hope you enjoy these great new feature and enjoy reducing your energy consumption and electricity bill totals!
Regards,

Hello,
This issue is usually due to the fact that there my be an alignment issue with the Power Monitor's sensor. The sensor is the blue hand that is attached to the Power meter outside. I will walk you through making the adjustment however before that, can you please let me know if you see a temperature reading on your in home display. If you do then this is most likely the issue.
To adjust the alignment you will need to go to your power meter and manually adjust the hand on the sensor. You can do this by opening the Sensor Arm Latch and pulling out the arm (slowly as to not pull the arm off of the sensor) and ensure that it is directly over the spinning disk in the power meter. If you have a digital power meter you will need to make sure that the left port on the meter is aligned just before the 1st line on the sensor arm (closest to the tip of the arm).
Once this is done then you will need to press and release the reset button on the sensor unit, do not hold down the reset button as this will reset your unit. If the light on the power sensor switches to a regular flash, then this should have worked for you.
You may need to wait a few minutes for the data to start being displayed on your in home display again as normal.
The following is a link explaining the installation process. This will show you how to make the adjustments I described above.
