PlotWatt claims that with the Power Cost Monitor it can monitor at the appliance level. I understand that the PCM only reads the power at the meter, not the power on individual circuits going to individual appliances.

Appliance-Level Insight
PlotWatt doesn’t just help you with the monthly total, it can tell you how much you spend on each appliance. Ever wondered whether it was the air conditioner or the pool pump driving up your summer energy bill? ...

How is this possible using only the total power going through my meter, without power measurements on the individual circuits from my breaker box?

Hello hopefully I can shed some light on the workings of PlotWatt and how the energy buckets are comprised.

While the short answer is of course “It’s a secret” the PlotWatt site takes the whole home data information provided by the sensor on the meter, through the WiFi Gateway in for analysis.

From there machine learning algorithms are applied to zero in on the patterns and behaviours of usage. As users we can ****ist by completing the homes profile with what we have running so that the algorithm can get a bit of a head start or “heads-up” on what to expect.

This is indeed a radical change from many systems/providers where receptacle plugs, and circuit by circuit hardware is required. What you will notice is that the buckets tend to group usage from devices doing the same things (heating, cooking, etc.) and instead of TV+DVD+Computer, it may be titled “Other” or “always on”

In any event, very cool when you se it in use and a real step forward in displaying the data.
